I am Janet Caldwell, and I am running for School Board Position #5 because I believe every student deserves a high-quality education. As a long-time resident of Lakewood, I am a proud Clover Park School District graduate, as are my two children. I believe every parent/family wants their children to be seen, heard, respected, and provided quality instruction that leads to a meaningful diploma with the skills required to become independent.
I have been a public school educator for 27 years in the Bethel School District and currently serve as the Bethel Education Association president. I’m a National Board-Certified teacher who collaborates and gets things done. I understand budgets and will uphold Clover Park District's stellar reputation as a wise steward of taxpayer monies. I am focused on ensuring an excellent student education, retaining and attracting quality educators, and moving the Clover Park School District forward.
I support the 9 different pathway options to graduation students can take in Washington State (see link below). Families and educators know that children have different talents and academic strengths; students are more than a high-stakes test score. As a board director, I want students engaged in learning, excited to attend classes, motivated to strive for excellence, and recognized for their achievements. I support timely academic interventions and career counseling with family involvement to keep all students on a path to success.

Every family has hopes and dreams for their children. Parents/Families have the right to choose what is best for their child. I believe the beliefs of one parent never overpower the rights of another. I do not support the banning of books or the erasing of history and facts. Every parent/family has the right to exclude their child from an experience, lesson, or reading material.
The safety of our students and staff is a high priority. As a board director, I will support a budget that provides updated physical safety protections to our schools. Our educators and staff need to be heard and supported when it comes to in-school discipline and behavior intervention. I support the continued use of social and emotional curriculum to teach students coping skills and how to self-regulate their behavior, as well as providing adequate staffing of counselors and mental health services.
